I Have Windows XP and Automatic Updates disabled itself and I can't get it
turned back on.
These are the steps I took to turn it on:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button

the problem is everytime i hit start a error message stating: Error 1058 The
service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no
enabled devices associated with it.

Could you please tell me what i am doing wrong or how to fix this

Hello ozzman650,

The symptoms you describe indicate that a malware known as
Vundo\Virtumonde is resident. Using Internet Explºrer, have the system
scanned here: <http://onecare.live.com/site/en-au/center/howsafe.htm>

Several posters in this newsgroup have reported that the malware was
successfully removed using the above scanner.

You can use google to find it if the OneCare scan doesn't remºve it.

Others have used SUPERAntiSpyware and/or Malwarebytes Antimalware to remove
the malware

There is a free version (on demand scanning only), the paid for version
includes active monitoring, similar tº Windows defender:
<http://www.superantispyware.com/>

Also free, Malwarebytes Antimalware <http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php>

Also I would suggest running a HijackThis to to ensure that Vundo did not
bring along any uninvited guests. (SDBot and ZLOB, all protected by a
rootkit.)
Please read this guide before actually doing the procedure
And it has all of the links for downloads you need.
Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log
<http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html>

If, the system is clean of malware, then read on:

"Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058"
error message when you manually start the Remote Procedure Call service
Source:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838428>

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive
an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP
or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
Source:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896224>

This will give you a starting point for your troubleshooting anyway.

Please let us know if the problem remains

There's a very strong possibility that the problem is due to a hijackware
infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thank you!
I was having the same problem but it now appears resolved. This post was
exactly what I was looking for, though it took me the better part of the day
to sort through the options to find the best one.
If you're having the same problem, and you don't have a lot of time on your
hands, I'd suggest starting with the superantispyware option because that's
what finally fixed the problem for me. I like the onecare.live service but --
maybe I was between updates -- it left a lot of malware on my c drive that
superantispyware cleaned out in only a fraction of the time.
