Automatic update failing and retrying forever

Yesterday, Automatic Update decided to download an update for:

Nvidia Corporation - Sound - NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface

Now, when I start my computer, it reports that there is an update waiting to
be installed; if I say "yes, install it", it attempts to do so and fails.
Next time I start my computer, it reports that there is an update waiting to
be installed; if I say "yes, install it", it attempts to do so and fails.
Next time I start my computer, it reports.... and so ad infinitum.

How do I remove this update from the list of things needing to be installed?

The exact error message that I get is:

Updates were unable to be successfully installed
