I am trying to install an update for Realtek AC97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio
Controller and I am getting the above failure measure. Any ideas how to
reset this download?

Thomas;
In the future get drivers directly from the manufacturers web site and not
from Microsoft.

If the driver comes up as a Critical Update, there is normally a good reason
and you should consider
Getting the driver at that time from the manufacturer.
If the driver is not critical and everything is working fine, do not install
the newer driver

This error is the specific driver related problem. Call MS

The update came with the automatic update settings, hence i think it was a
critical update. I usually don't upgrade drivers from MS, don't know why
they gave me this one. BTW do you know the site to upgrade this driver?

Thomas;
The manufacturers website is the place to get the driver.
If you have an OEM computer and the sound card came with the computer, go to
the OEM web site.

Thanks for all the input, I checked the OEM site (Compaq) and it confirmed
that I got the latest driver already. If this is a beta version, why would
it get downloaded by the automatic update?

My bigger question is: how do I stop the icon popping up and asking me to
install? Once the install is cancelled I could go to windows update and
'hide' this particular update and all this mess is over.

I found the following suggestion in one of the latest postings:

1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type "net stop wuauserv" without the quotes at the command prompt, and
press Enter.
4. Delete (or put in recycle bin) the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (but not the SoftwareDistribution folder)
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try Windows Update again.

In point 4 I proceeded a little different: I moved all the content into a
another folder.
After that I reset my automatic update to notify only. The icon popped up to
DOWNLOAD the driver again and I thankfully declined. When I checked on the
MS update site I found that the driver update is now hidden.
Hope it stays that way!!!!
