Automatic Update fails as does Windows Defender Install

I've hit a problem on one of the computers we support that has me baffled.
This has only appeared on one computer so far (thank goodness) and is a
relatively new computer (6 months) and has been there since install.

Automatic update fails to install patches without issuing an error message
(just continues to tell the user patches are ready to install). Using
update.microsoft.com fails as well, no error messages other than a
notification that each patch failed to install. If we download each patch
manually from the KB and then install each manually they install just fine.
Time consuming but we can say the system is patched.

We tried to install windows defender 2 and it failed .... with just a
message the the install failed.

We're out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Kevin

Having exactly the same problem on two fresh XP installations at work just
the now.

This started on friday, i hoped it would have maybe cleared over the weekend
but to no avail. I even rang Microsoft on Friday for support who were far
from helpful, i thought they were supposed to help out on updates, but they
reffered me to Dell as it was a Dell PC who had no idea what to do other than
confirm i could download stuff properly generally... Fiurthermore microsoft
call-centre dudes had were oblivious to whether something was wrong with
Windows Updates site, so i know nothing right now.

Please please microsofties, confirm windows updates is working or not, would
it be too difficult to put up a status web page????

further to my previous post, i must stress that, there are NO error messages,
and downloads seem to not complete downloading the required amount of data
for each patch.

Like everyone in this thread I've had the same problem for a couple of weeks,
but today I FIXED IT!!! The only problem is I'm not sure how.

I restored a registry clean to around a couple of weeks ago (when the
installation failure started) using the prgramme itself and not Windows
Restore and then made sure that the following services were started:
AutoLiveUpdate
AutoUpdate
WindowsInstaller

As soon as this had been done and I ran the installation, all of the updates
and security patches installed successfully.

Hope this helps.
