Automatic Update Failure since 10/4/2006

Beginning on 10/4/2006, all updates, both via automatic updates and
through the update website, have failed. Given the nature of Automatic
Update Services, this amounts to over 250 failed attempts to update Windows
XP-Pro, Office-Pro and Windows Defender. One of the side issues is that the
processes, running background, take resources away from all other processes
causing a "slow" environment.
Whatever happened on or about 10/4 has affected the Installation
Services, as an attempt to load the Java Runtime Environment failed and
returned a notice that the Windows Installation Services returned an unknown
error.
Prior to 10/4, all Automatic Updates and Manual Updates installed
successfully. This is a system where all updates are applied monthly in an
attempt to keep all security and OS services current.
Looking around the Internet, it seems that from the vantage point of
Redmond some small problems have been resolved, but certainly those, like me,
who use the MS update services don't seem to be getting their problems
resolved?
Will there be some support and widespread resolution to this issue?
Thanks...JG

You, of course, disabled your AV before installing the updates and
cleared all temp files and caches, right?

Sorry but what sort of crap "response" is that --- I have been in software
for 18 years and I dont even know what "cache" blabla r u talking about. How
is the average Joe supposed to figure this out? When will Microsoft learn to
stop making crap? G'dman it, I know I should have gone with Apple (which I
almost did) 6 months ago...

Unlike some ignorant and thankless posters, I found turning off
TrendMicroSecurity2006 finally did the trick. Thanks Alias~

Not sure whether an update of Windows or an update of TrendMicro caused the
initial problem, but clearly there was a conflict. Doesn't matter now.

Ironically, TrendMicro was reporting that I had vulnerabilities from not
updating Windows.

From now on, I'll simply exit (de-activate) TrendMicro and use IE to update
Windows manually and then reboot.

I haven't been able to update manually or automatically since
mid-August. The applet just keeps searching my computer
for whatever it is that it's searching for, and then, after an hour
or so, it gives up. I have had ZoneAlarm installed for about 9
months with no Windows update problems, but I tried turning
off ZoneAlarm, and it didn't help. Something happened as a
result of the mid-August security updates which screwed
everything up.

Starting about mid-August, after a set of updates, my
computer would run the "Checking for Updates" applet
but not find anything for about an hour, then it would
report an error.

Now, I got Windows Update to run on my computer again.
I went to IE's Internet Options/Security tab and put
"*.microsoft.com" on the Trusted Sites list, and for
Trusted Sites I enabled just about everything having
to do with ActiveX and scripting and I disabled
Pop Up Blocker.

Now Windows Update runs the applet for 12 to 16
minutes and then gives me a menu of updates.
Whew!
