I'm in a small corporate network running windows xp professional sp2. Some of
the systems have the automatic update greyed out. I have tried many of the
offered fixes servises.msc,gpedit.msc, finding the inf folder and
reinstalling au, reregistering many of the .dll files associated with windows
update. None of these have worked. Are there any other suggestions that i may
try?

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

3. If all else fails:-

Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179)

TaurArian thank you for your help, but I have tried to reregister all of the
wu.dll files and even tried the kelly's-korner link. None have worked for me.
I have been thinking it might be a group policy, but not all of the computers
have this problem. do you have any other suggestions i should try?

TaurArian, I have checked the second link and have scoured the group to find
solutions and have tried numerous ones. Right now I can't manually download
because the activeX won't install. I have finally gotten through to microsoft
and have someone that might be able to help(haven't had any luck with there
customer service). I'll post my findings and hopefully it will help anybody
else,

thanks again

I have finally got my options back in automatic updates. After a few emails
with microsoft they were finally able to solve my problem. To solve it one
has to go

regedit
goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate
and rightclick on the folder windowsupdate.
goto export and save it for backup.
then delete the folder and all its subfolders.

still in regedit
goto
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv\Parameters
in this folder look at Service.dll.double click on it and look to see if the
value data is
"C:\windows\system32\wuauserv.dll" if not make sure to change it to this.

then restart your machine.

I don't guarantee that this will work for everyone and changing items from
the registry, without a backup is not advised, but hopefully this will help
anyone having similar problems.
