My laptop continues to automatically download and install the same updates
every time i shut down my computer. The Automatic Update Icon will not go
away after shutting down my laptop resulting in downloading and installing
the same updates, day after day. Any ideas on how to get rid of the
Automatic Update Icon once the download and install have been completed.

Hi biggym:

When the same updates are reoffered, then they may not actually be
installed. Even if the Microsoft Update web site reports that an
update succeeded, it is not always so. If your system downloads
updates automatically, and the installation ends by telling you that
it's finished, it is not always so.

You did not mention what operating system is involved or which
updates continue to install.

If the updates downloaded automatically, then choose a "Custom"
install when asked, so that you can see the names and numbers of the
specific updates. Write them down, and post all of the above
information to this newsgroup. The solutions are often a function
of the specific updates.

Also, look for a link on the Shut Down Computer dialog box that says
something like, "Shut down Windows without installing updates". If
your operating system displays this link, then clicking it shuts
down the computer without wasting time attempting to install
something that is probably failing. You can also hide the update
icon by customizing the system tray (i.e., on the customize dialog
box, locate the icon and choose Always Hide).

Doing these last two things might get rid of the annoyance that
comes with reoffered updates, but eventually you should spend some
time to verify whether or not the updates are actually installed by
searching this newsgroup or posting the specifics.

Cheers,

~ Mark
