Hello Again
After countless attempts the following automatic updates from MS fail (see
list here)

Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB933669).... Failed
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB933666).... Failed
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB934181).... Failed
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB934180).... Failed
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB934708).... Failed

These 5 updates continue to fail after many attempts of successfully coming
on in a Windows Automatic Update Notification. I have posted before, and want
to assure any reading this, or re-reading this, I have done several cleans,
registry checks and cleans, etc. I have follow several MS-MVP suggestions and
followed their statements that in short amount to "Do This and Do That" all
to no success.
I have Windows XP w/ SP2 and have configured the automatic updates on. All
services are running. In the past this feature has run well in the past
regardless for all updates. Yet on 5/9/07 through 5/11/07 these 5 continually
fail regardls of any steps suggested or attempted. Is there any help? I now
have resolved just to let the YELLOW SHIELD sit and not to initalize it due
to the fact that unlike Baseball, HOPE DOES NOT SPRING ETERNAL here. Yet, be
the glutton for punishment that I am, if there are steps someone senses I
should take I will read and consider them. Thanks for your comments and
suggestions. All other applications and other programs run flawlessly it is
these 5 that do not want to install.

Thank You
Coach Cone

Check the Office Source Engine service is running. Right click "My
Computer" - "Manage", select "Services and Applications", then
"Services". Double click on "Office Source Engine", and setting the
Startup Type to either manual or automatic should allow you to start
the service. The patches should then install.

I have the exact same problem. None of the Office 2003 updates from the
Tuesday Update (5/8/07) apply. I also have tried every suggestion I've seen
(including this one - Office Source Engine was running, so this didn't fix
the problem).

Seems many people are experiencing this problem.

Still looking for a fix.

I'm afraid the so-called "Registry Cleans" might very well have caused this
problem. Try backing up your system to a date before you ran any Registry
Cleaner.

Also, ensure that you have disabled any anti-virus or anti-spyware
application before attempting the Office Update.

I tried turning AntiVirus off. No difference.

Only Antispyware is Windows Defender.

No Registry Cleaner has ever been used.

One thing I haven't tried yet is reinstalling OSE.Exe from the Office 2003
CD - just in case OSE has somehow gotten corrupted.

Hi,
I have a exactly the same problem but I now have a total of 8 updates that
have failed to install. It would be nice if somebody at Microsoft has a
solution to this problem. Its driving me around the bend!

Hello Robyn
I tried all of these steps and when attempting the Office Repair it gets
about 1/2 way and reports that Office PE Setup has failed.

I did use a Registric Mechanic from PC Tools. If this is the problem, then
how do I work around it or through it. I have turned all AV off and it still
hangs and fails.

Suggestions are helpful. It appears that Arbra answered for me and his reply
is not mine. I am a coach and teacher and thus often cannot get back to
issues until later in the day. Thanks in advance of helps you may offer.

If Office PE Setup is failing, then this suggests that the basic problem
lies with Office Setup rather than Microsoft Update, as all updates require
the basic Office Setup program to be working.

At this stage, I suggest a complete re-installation of Office from the
original media, then visit Microsoft Update and apply all pending updates.

All the above with anti-virus and anti-spyware applications disabled or
uninstalled.

A registry cleaner will sometimes keep a backup of the registry entries it
has changed or deleted. If yours does, then it should offer you a way of
restoring the registry.

Final Follow up on this issue. In my case after discussions with a MS-MVP,
and running a few diagnoitics ideas to eliminate major issues, I merely
Un-installed myh MSO PE2003 (Mircrosoft Office Professional 2003) and then
close down my computer. Afterward, I rebooted and then Re-installed
MSOPE2003. I then went to MS Web Site to get the Office 2003 Service Pack 2
and let it load in any files necessary. Once this was done the entire system
ran like a charm. This process may be one of the only ways to completely
clean and clear all Hidden files, registry matters, and other potential snaps
which may have occurred.
