My automatic update wants to install a security patch based on KB 912919.

The message I get is:
================================================== ============
Size: 196 KB - 710 KB

A remote code execution security issue has been identified in the Graphics
Rendering Engine that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise your
Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your
computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this
item, you may have to restart your computer.

More information for this update can be found at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=58471

================================================== ====================================

A number of things look fishy to me:

First, I don't ever recall seeing a link in the messages before.

The link looks like it redirects.

The size of the file is not specific.

So, I went looking for KB912919. Microsoft claims it doesn't exist.

I'm all for auto update being timely, but this just strikes me as plain
stupid if MS is updating before posting a KB article -- if that's the case.

Can someone direct me to KB912919?

Thanks!

W. G. Davis

Yeah, i wouldnt download it yet. I have had some extreme problems with World
of Warcraft since installing this update, to the point where it is not
playable because the graphics are so corrupt. I dont think it is related to
this game, as i have also had this occur with less severity in another game.
And i can't seem to roll back/ get rid of it now. So just beware with this fix

Hi,

The update is legit.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=58471 redirects to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-001.mspx
where you will find manual download links for the MS06-001/912919
update.

The KB article is also available:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912919

The reason for the non-specific update size is because Windows Update
uses express update files that will vary in size depending on how
up-to date your computer is.

Regards,
Torgeir
