Automatic update KB926247 hangs

My 2003 server was doing an automatic update and hangs at the
installation of KB926247 patch. SNMP is install and running on the
server but the automatic update just hangs there. Do not continue with
update or able to cancel and/or rollback the install. If I simply kill
the update process, I am worry about corrupted Windows update file may
kill my server on restart. Any suggestions?

Same hang for me, whether automatic or manually initiated. I have SNMP
installed on Win2k3 Server. The dialog box shows:
Initializing installation ... done!
Installing Security Update for WIndows Server 2003 (KB926247) (update 1 of
1) ...

and it stayed there for 20 minutes, could not make anything else happen in
any window on the screen. Overall progrress bar got to about 2/3. Finally
clicked the Cancel button and at least that was noticed. The dialog box said
"Canceling updates..." and it is now stuck there. Looks like I'll need to
power cycle to get going again.

I was having the same issue. Thinking I needed to power cycle the server, I
went into our server room and logged into the server and there were a couple
drwtsn32.exe error popups. Cleared those, checked the event logs and there
was an entry under System from the Windows Update agent that KB926247 had
installed successfully. Walked back to my workstation that had a remote
desktop connection to the server and windows update had finished and was
ready to restart. The only other thing I had tried was starting the SNMP
service, so I'm not sure if that prompted the Dr. Watson errors.

No Dr Watsons, no minidumps. Saw the same effect if I was on the local
console or in via TermServ. My SNMP Service is running and has been all
along. I don't see anything in the Appls or Systm event logs that seems
irregular except for the "the previous restart was unexpected" after I power
cycle the machine.

Symantec AntiVirus's Tamper Protection prevents the patch from installing.
Disable the service "Symantec SPBBCSvc" and reboot. Then apply the patch.
Afterward, re-enable it before rebooting.

If the installation hung after a previous update attempt, Windows Update
might not offer the patch again even though it wasn't really installed. You
may have to get a manual patch from Microsoft's downloads site.
