Automatic Update keeps getting disabled

I recently formatted my drive an installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro. I
was able to get to the Windows Update site and download all the updates.
That is, all the updates except SP2, which I don't want at this time.

Anyway, I am now starting to notice that Auto Update is not running. If I
right-click on My Computer and check Properties, it says it is turned on, but
when I go check Start/Run/Services.msc, it is disabled and stopped. I set it
to automatic and start it, but if I go back and check it again in a few
minutes, it is disabled again.

It is getting really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks

Have you scanned for viri?
A recent article stated the average time for an infection, on broadband was
10 mins and dial up 20 mins, for an unprotected system.

I have in fact. The first thing i did after I got Windows all updated was
install Norton System Works 2003. Then I fully updated that, and ran a full
scan. It didn't find anything, so unless it is a really sneaky virus, I
don't know.

Thanks

I decided to take a look in the registry, because I've seen some people
mention virus type things that can hide in there and disable or delete auto
update. I have yet to find any of the entries that other people mentioned,
but I did find something else.

Going to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/WindowsUpdate/Auto Update

I found a DWORD entrie in there called ResetAU, with a value of 1. I though
that looked funny, so I removed it. I made sure to set Auto Update to
"Automatic" and "Start" and then I restarted my computer.

When it booted up, Auto Update worked, and the little icon pooped up.
However, when I checked services.msc, Auto Update was "started" but also set
to "disabled." I restarted once more, and it was then set to "Stopped" and
Disabled.

So it looks like the value I deleted didn't fix anything. I went back and
checked the registry again, and it hasn't come back, but it still isnt
working. The only other values in that folder are:

(Default)
AUOptions
BalloonTime
BallonType
ConfigVer
NextDetectionTime

Other than that, I don't know where to look.

Did the reg key get replaced after reboot and running AU?
I would have thought the value should be either 0 or 1 (off/on?)
I'm not on an XP sys today so I cannot check mine

Nope, the ResetAU value has yet to come back. But I am still having the
problem, so there must be something hidden somewhere else that is causing it.
In my post above I listed all the other values in that folder. Maybe one of
those doesnt belong there too? I can get all the updates, because I can
enable it right before I go to the webpage, but I want to get Auto Update
working, so I will know when I need to update stuff.

Thanks
