Automatic Update killed my PC

I recieved an automatioc update on April 3rd. After being shut down, the
computer has failed to boot up every time. I have attempted booting into
safe-mode, and also booting into the "last settings that worked" and neither
of them were successful. what has Windows Update done to my PC? how can I fix
it?

So every time I start up my computer, it starts to initialize windows, and
then the screen goes black, and the computer restarts. when I disable the
automatic restart, this message appears:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly
with a status of 0xc000026c (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down

As I said, this only started happening since I accepted the most recent
Windows Automatic Update on or around April 3rd 2007. I'm running Windows XP
x64 Home Ed. How can I reverse what you did to my PC if I can't even get it
started? RSVP ASAP

Hi there,

try booting in safe mode and run system restore, go back to a date before
the problem occurred.

If that does not work try uninstalling Hotfix number 890859 se here how to
do so: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/spuninst.htm

Hm, there's no 64bit version of Windows XP Home Edition out there.
If you're sure about using the Windows XP Professional 64bit version
of Windows XP, do you have SP2 for that 64bit version installed?

You should be able to start the machine in Safe Mode (hit [F8] before
the Windows logo displays).

There is no 64bit edition of Windows XP Home. You mean your system is 64 bit capable maybe.

Also which Update did you install that seems to cause this issue for you. Can you boot to Safe mode

Oh my gosh, I just found this forum and I am so glad [but sorry for you also]
to know that I'm not alone.

I am running Windows XP Professional SP2.

After my computer automatically downloaded and installed KB925902 at
midnight of 4/3, it also automatically rebooted and crashed. Basically it
completes the BIOS tests sucessfully and hangs up before even getting to a
Windows screen. There is no option to boot into Safe Mode or the Last Known
Good Configuration.

Microsoft was absolutely no help. I tried everything from repairing the
installation to doing fixboot in Recovery Console. I even tried a parallel
installation without success. I finally had to reformat the drive and
reinstall from the CD. That was today.

To add insult to injury, I reinstalled Windows, got all my virus protection
loaded, [had not done any windows updates yet], downloaded and installed IE7
and upon reboot the same thing happened again.

You should note that my drive is only 2 months old, I have been running my
system successfully for the past two months. I've also checked out all of my
hardware and done a comprehensive diagnostic check on the hard drive.

Microsoft is clueless so don't waste your time spending hours on the phone
with them.

If anyone out there knows what is happening, I'd love to get some insight
into the problem.

Tracy, I just got hammered by that as well. And I still have to transmit my
taxes in the next couple of days *** ouch! ***. Who at MS are you speaking
with, I have such a hard time trying to get support unless I go through my
software assurance plan at work, but I don't like eating up instances for a
personal system.

Patrick, I feel your pain. I, too, am now rushing to get taxes done.

You should be able to call the Microsoft support line and open a new case
file. Tell them that the problem occurred as a result of a Windows Update
and they will not charge you. I'm sorry to say that they had no resolution
for me and I had to reformat and reinstall all of my data. Now, fortunately,
if you can put your drive in a slave capacity to another bootable drive, you
should be able to retrieve all of your data first. I fought the reformat for
over a week and the case was escalated up to their research department....but
nothing they suggested worked. Plus I had done a lot of scouring on the
Knowledge Base and had tried things myself.

When you do reinstall everything, make sure you (a) don't pull in updates
when you download IE7 and then (b) carefully deselect KB925902 (by doing a
custom install on Windows Updates) when you update Windows.
