Automatic update not functioning properly

I receive the notification telling me there are updates available, and
displaying a list of the updates and do I want to download. I answer yes,
and the little icon disappears from my taskbar, never to return (30 minutes
pass). I open IE, and click on Tools, Windows Update The search process is
completed displaying the same list as previously displayed where I click to
download and install. Halfway through the download, the little icon
reappears on my taskbar telling me it is ready to download the updates. I
ignore it an let the current download complete and install. Get the usual
message have to reboot for installations to be in effect. Ignore that, and
click on the ready to install icon on my task bar which blinks an I get the
restart message again.

Any ideas on how I can get back to the one step automatic updates

You are too impatient. The downloads can take up to a week in practice.
Access to the download servers is regulated so that not every Automatic
Update client can download simultaneously.

OK, so your saying that I should leave it alone and in time (I turn my
computer off at night) I will receive the indication that the files are
downloaded and I can install them at that time.
