Automatic Update Not Turned Enabled

When I attempt a manual WinXP update, I get an error message, in effect
saying I can't update because I haven't enabled Automatic Updates. Is this
something new? I don't want to enable Automatic Updates, as I don't want the
interuption.

Thanks.

Post the complete error message in its entirety, please.

You must have the AU Service enabled to get updates.

Set Automatic Update service to Automatic and verify the Status is Started
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Find the Automatic Updates service, and right-click to select it.
Select Properties.
In the Startup Type list, select Automatic.
Verify the service Status is Started.
Click OK.

If you don't want the interruption, then set to notify only -

I have never enabled AU and have had no problems in the past. Yesterday was
the first time I was required to enable AU prior to manually obtaining them.

I do not see a choice to "Notify Only". The only choises are "Automatic" ,
"Manual" and "Disable".

The message itself is rather long - over a page. Here's the jist of it:
Eror number 0x8DDD0018
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:
*Automatic Updates
*Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
*Event Log
BITS and Event Log were running. After enabling AU, I was able to obtain
the update. I disabled AU again, and received the error message again, so I
know this is the problem.

I have never enabled AU and have had no problems in the past. Yesterday was
the first time I was required to enable AU prior to manually obtaining them.

Yes, I read the article, but it doesn't answer my question.

I want nothing to do with Automatic Updates, including notification that
updates are available. I've been doing this for years, with no problem.
Starting yesterday, when I attempt to manually update WinXP, I get the error
message saying I can't obtain updates because I do no have Automatic Updates
enabled.

Q. <snip> I do not see a choice to "Notify Only". The only choices are "Automatic" ,

I thought you were looking for the choices above which the article covers

Q. <snip> Starting yesterday, when I attempt to manually update WinXP, I get the error
| message saying I can't obtain updates because I do no have Automatic Updates
| enabled.<snip>

Then enable "automatic updates" when you wish to scan for manual updates.
