automatic update will not work

I had problems a couple weeks ago, ie unexplained icons, pop ups even when I
said NO pop ups, fonts on IE kept changing, etc, etc THOUGHT I handled it
once....XPPro home edition, McAfee Antivirus, all kept current with automatic
updates. Windows firewall always on. Cable connection, router networked, no
problems with other computer. Not sure how I "fixed" it before, updated and
ran Spybot and Adaware over and over for one thing.........

BIG problems this past week, NO internet connection, but Outlook Express
always works. I've gone back and forth to the other computer and emailed or
burned CDs with files....Now I'm back on the Internet, (at least for now, I
lose it at times) running Microsoft antispyware beta (new program for me),
McAfee, and using updated AdAware with VX2 addon and seem to be somewhat OK,
except I keep running the AdAware VX2 addon, it says it found VX2 variant,
reboot and run AdAware, I've done this a dozen times, over and over. Adaware
never finds anything when scanning ....Neither does McAfee or Microsoft..

Anyway my biggest question, MIcrosoft Windows updates will NOT work, I get a
0x80072EFD error. Microsoft Anti Spyware will NOT update, "can't connect to
internet" error message. I added update.microsoft, /download.windowsupdate
to my trusted sites...I've pinged my connection, 4 OK...I ran proxyconfig and
wuauserv..

I tried turning off McAfee "on access scan" and connecting to windows
update...pop ups ALL over the place, then IE didn't work again.....Ran
Adaware and VX2 addon a coule times...I'm at least back on the internet
again..

SO here I am, IE works for now, I'm NOT closing it, terrified to make any
changes .... Hubby is laughing that I won't send my system out for
help.......I'm an accountant, NOT really computer literate, I don't believe
I'm really computer stupid either..

Thanks for the vent, that alone helped

This is a FAQ and you are using the web interface to newsgroups.
To search for previous answers just press Alt-7 and enter the code.
For this particular code you can filter the results further by using the
Answered Questions item in the Show: box. Other useful answers
could be discovered by adding either MSFT or MVP to your query.

What is the URL in the Address bar when you get this symptom?

Instead of pinging the server name implied by that URL
you could try using telnet 80 to simulate some of what IE
would be doing when requesting a connection with it.
E.g. a subset of the request which is often sufficient to give
useful clues about the symptom is GET /
(That's GET<space><slash><Enter> typed when the screen
clears after entering the telnet command. You will not see
your typing.)

This same diagnostic may be useful to get more clues about
your first symptom too. E.g. with:

telnet update.microsoft.com 80

When I do that I get:

<example>
HTTP/1.1 302 Object moved
Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2005 14:10:55 GMT
Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0
X-Powered-By: ASP.NET
Location: /windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx
</example>

This means that a redirect is involved before you actually
can see any useful HTML.

So then what you can do is repeat the same command
but this time enter when the screen clears:

GET /windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx HTTP/1.1

E.g. copy that line from here into your ClipBoard
and then paste it into the telnet window using Alt-Space,E,P

Hmm... perhaps not. That only works if I also type
another bit of IE's request on another line:

Host: update.microsoft.com

and then press Enter twice.

Alternatively there are other newsgroups which specialize
in supporting the Anti-Spyware product's beta test.
