When Automatic Update runs I loose sound

Twice now when the auto updates run, I appear to loose the sound drivers on
my PC. Last time I was able to run Windows Update and it fixed it. If I run
Windows Update now it just hangs and nothing happens. I am on Windows XP
still with no sound.

Any suggestions.
