Automatic Update service causes XP Pro lockup: can this be fixed?

Shortly after logging in Wednesday AM, LiveOneCare apparently started to
download/install the 5/8/07 patches and my system (XP Pro SP2, 80GB hard
drive, 2GB RAM) locked up. I was unable even to start the Task Manager or
perform a normal shutdown. Eventually I resorted to a hard shutdown, after
which I could boot, but the system locked up as soon as I logged in again.

After a long and tedious day of in Safe, diagnostic or selective startup
modes, I was finally able to restore most computer functions- but only if the
Automatic Update service and all LiveOneCare services are disabled.

I'm unable to think of a way to fix this. I understand that MS has released
a corrective patch, but I can't download it with the Automatic Update service
disabled.

Any ideas? Or will I have to reinstall my OS and start over all again? (If
that's the case I'll certainly not reinstall LiveOneCare.)

We have had numerous PC's all of which use Microsoft Automatic Updates
on XP service pack 2 lock up, perform poorly and generally become huge
problems since early last week.

I think Microsoft has a big problem which is now our big problem.

For a fix to this problem, please do BOTH of the following:

1. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

2. (not for Vista) Download and install update KB927891 version 3:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>

If the first of these produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in:

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

After the fixes have been installed, doing a Microsoft Update or Automatic
Update might still take some time (though not as much as before) and
processor and disk usage, but it should not lock out user-level interaction
with the system and applications, so it should not be such an inconvenience.

By the way, do you have Office 2003 installed on the problem PCs?
