Follow the steps laid out that were posted May 4th at the top.
That's what's causing the 'major slowdown'.
Also suggest that the system have some 'housecleaning' done.
Show hidden files, folders, and system files :

Using Windows Explorer [ Start > Programs ( All Programs on XP Home ) >
Accessories ] navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
Open the subfolder, Download, and delete *all contents*
Open the subfolder, EventCache, and delete *all contents*
Close Windows Explorer
Empty the Recycle Bin
IF the issue rears it's ugly head again, stop the Automatic Update
service - Start > Run > type in
net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
Leave the Services console OPEN for now
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
Delete DataStore.edb [ NOTE: Deleting DataStore.edb will erase the
update history shown on the Windows or Microsoft Update site ]
Close Windows Explorer
Empty the Recycle Bin
Restart the AU service -
Start > Run > type in
net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
