I have the same problem, it started when I tried to shut the PC down this
morning. The only difference is that mine is trying to apply 3 updates. I
left it for 30 mins but it still claimed to be updating No 1.

I had the same problem this morning after leaving the computer on all night.
I cleared the problem by:
1 - go to control panel
2 - open up system
3 - click automatic updates tab
4 - change settings to "notify me but don't update" and apply it
I did this then re-started the computer. The system then told me I had
updates to install. I installed the 3 updates and bingo I can switch off the
computer with no problems.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Paul. I'll try that tonight.

We had exactly the same issue this morning with my husbands laptop - I am
going to turn it off, even though the message says not to. Think this is
unique to updates last nite?

I have same problem last night. I shutdown the pc after 2 hours' waiting even
the message say "do not turn off or unplug computer." I rebooted the PC, it
looks ok but when I try to down load the new update again, it is 0 beyts for
the update files and install failed. When I shutdown PC before I went to bed
I got the same message again "Don not turn off or unplug computer; it will
turn off automatically." I keep it running. but I find it still running this
morning... So, I come here to see if I can find a solution. It's great news,
I will try it again tonigh

Thanks, Paul

Same here, left it on all night and still showing message in the morning.
Pressed reset and got everything back on, then clicked shutdown and the same
happened. Pressed reset again and changed the settings to "Download but let
me choose when to install" and now it does not hang up, but it is showing no
sign that there is anything to install. Help!

Thanks for giving me the courage to shut the computer off. I was already set
up to notify but not install, as I hate being interrupted in the middle of
something.

All three items were waiting to be installed when I got back into Windows. I
think the reason the new "overnight" feature hung is that one of the updates
requires Okaying a license agreement. Obviously someone at Microsoft didn't
think this through....

I encountered this problem as well.
What's strange is that I'm on broadband cable. There's no reason XP should
have difficulty downloading updates.
