Automatic Update vs Hidden Updates

A friend who is not very computer facile cannot use IE 7 because she uses a
proprietary app that has not yet been updated to be compatible with IE7.

On her computer, I went to WU and check the box to "hide" the IE7 update and
not to ask about it again. I then configured her system to use autoWU, that
is, to download and install critical updates automatically, so that she will
automatically get any critical security updates (because I don't want her to
have to remember to keep checking manually).

I know that if you manually go to WU and select "custom", it will complain
about there being a hidden update, but won't actually give it to you unless
you deliberately "unhide" it. What about AutoUpdate? Will it ignore hidden
updates? Or do I have to use the special tool to prevent the installation
of IE7, which I found out about after I did the above.

Not a good idea not to have some control over MS updates.
Can you not teach her how to do it?
This month or last month an update installed and didnt tell you that a
reboot was required, when it was??
It did not effect me because I do manual install and always boot after each
update install, whether asked to or not.

and some rubbish/unwanted/not needed stuff.

There is only one Black Tuesday each month.

Never heard of such a tool - but somebody may have.

Scroll down to:

Your best option, from reading the needs, would be:

And here are the FAQs on the tool:

Good Luck.

AU /should/ respect the hiding of IE7 at WU.

In any event, IE7 will NOT install automatically: User has to approve the
installation. Your friend should decline to install IE7 if presented by AU.
