Automatic Updates Aren't Automatic

Hi,

We set up all of our computers to run automatic windows updates at 10:00 PM
last night. When I came in today mine had run without any problem, but the
other computers had a pop-up window and were still in the stage where it
required the user to click to run the updates. So, I guess it started, but
wasn't toally automatic.

I read in Help that these should be set up as "Administrator". Does anyone
know what we need to do to set this up to run automatically?

How were they set up to automatically update ?
Is Group Policy involved ?
How many workstations are on the network ?
Is there a server involved ?

The more details you provide the quicker you will get an answer.

How were they set up to automatically update ?
Start - Control Panel - Scheduled Tasks - Add Scheduled Task - Scheduled
Task Wizard - Next - Windows Update - Next - Weekly - Set Time - Set Day of
Week - See User Name then enter password twice.Finish - This is set up on
my machine, and runs as scheduled.

Is Group Policy involved ?
What is that?

How many workstations are on the network ?
Eleven
Is there a server involved ?
Yes

What's the OS installed on the server, your workstation, and the other
workstations on the network ?

If you don't know what Group Policy is then, hopefully, it's not
involved in this scenario. Did someone else administer the network prior
to your doing so ?

How to schedule automatic updates in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP,
and in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327838

For the systems not updating automatically, suggest you right click My
Computer either on the Desktop or Start Menu, then choose Automatic Updates.
Set them to Automatic, Every day, @ 10:OO PM
* The logged on User must have Admin rights in order for the updates to
install *
Delete the Scheduled Task on each workstation

Suggest you take a look at WSUS:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win...s/default.mspx

That way you can test the updates prior to pushing them out to the
workstations on the network.

P.S. If the Scheduled Task on the workstations points to wupdmgr.exe,
then what you're seeing is to be expected.
It should point to * wuauclt.exe *
