Automatic updates deleted

My Automatic updates service gets deleted following a
reinstall of Windows XP home sp1. After I reinstall
windows, run the update program, it downloads a current
update program and then deletes the service, rendering
the machine unable to even use the update website...the
error i get is 0x80070424.

Any ideas?

France telecom's ISP division (wanadoo)
is currently advising all it's Dutch customers to wait
before installing SP2

Translated:
"SP2 may disable your (high-speed) modem connection"


Their disclaimer is the one I'm seeing to often:

Service Pack 2 bij Microsoft."

Translated:
"problems resulting from the installation of SP2 will not be supported by
*vendor name. Contact MS"


Well, that's a real issue:
MS refers customers to their softw/hardware vendors to prepare for SP2,
and many of them refer back to MS.
