Automatic Updates doesn't work.

When I turn the automatic update service on, I get the standard error pop up
from XP saying that Auto Update has encountered a problem and needs to close.
No matter how many times I click on either of the three buttons (Debug, Send
Error Report, Don't Send) the error message immediately pops up again.

I have to keep to service disabled or the pop up error window is a huge pain
in the butt.

Has anyone seen this problem before?

Start > Run and type in "cmd" without the quotes. On the new screen type
in these lines and hit Enter key after each one:

sc query bits
sc query wuauserv

Post here what you have got.

Here is what I got:

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner>sc query bits

SERVICE_NAME: bits
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner>sc query wuauserv

SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 1 STOPPED
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 1077 (0x435)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

Thank you very much for any help you can provide. I'm pretty fluent with
Windows but this one has me whipped.

I have the very same problem. I also got the same "run" results. I am not
that literate in computers so please let me know if you find a solution.
Thanks, Bob

Try this: Start > Run and type in "net start wuauserv" without the
quotes. Go to Windows Update again. Does the issue get fixed?
