80246008 is a problem with the BITS service not running.

Ensure that the BITS service will start, and stay started. If the BITS
service stops shortly after being started, check the system Event Viewer for
error message from the BITS service.

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the
"0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;910337

You receive an error message when you try to download updates from the
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site, or when you
try to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916251/en-us?spid=6527

Thanks a lot. I was able to install the updates using the help contained in
KB 910337. Apparently, the registry key (FilesNotToBackup) was missing and I
had to add it.

By the way, this KB article was very straightforward and easy to follow
whereas the second KB article (916251) was a lot more complicated and
confusing. I would probably have screwed things up had I followed that! Was
it meant for Win XP? For example, the first article had me use "regedit" to
add the key whereas the second used "Reg add".

Thanks again,

Parts of both articles applied to WinXP, but the first one specifically
mentioned Windows 2000.
I included both articles for you to peruse to ascertain which one was most
beneficial to you.

Please you were able to fix your problem by the information provided in
"910337".

One final question! I have noticed that there are some older updates which
still show as "failed" including the ones that triggered my original question
to this newsgroup. How do I install those? Doesn't Automatic Updates install
all updates or just the most recent ones?

TIA,
-computerguy

The failed updates are part of your history. You can easily check to see
what has been installed and what hasn't -

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

From Microsoft - Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
