Hello, since a couple of weeks I have problems with the update
functionalitiy. Automatic updates are downloaded but hang when initialising
installation. Has anybody a solution for this?

Did you disable your Anti Virus' auto scan before starting the install?

Hi, thanks for the swift response. I just did that and ran the update again.
Now I receive a message that the updates were not installed. I tried again
and the same message, seems that I cannot install those updates anymore.

Hi Stephan, I am having the same problem. I downloaded the win xp updates
this morning only to find that they did not install. I went back to the win
up date site and it said:
Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
(*Downloaded; ready to install) .

I clicked the install button, and the installer opened, in its box it said
Installing... Initializing... and did nothing after that. I left it running
for an hour but no change.

I've gone back to the up date site tryed installing again and now I get this
message:
Updates were unable to be successfully installed
The following updates were not installed:
And then it listed them.

Help !

I don't know what to try.
I have disabled the antyvirus program and tryed the install but that did the
same thing.

I have exactly the same problem. Microsoft has nothing on the
Knowledge Base that will help.

For all those having issues downloading this month's updates :

Go here : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
Check the under Bulletin Description for the updates issued on October
11, 2005. Click on the link to get to the Sec Bulletin's page and then
use the links on that page to download the updates to your system.
Save them, then close IE, and install them at your leisure.

It appears that Windows/Microsoft Updates sites are experiencing
extremely heavy traffic. Had to do this on my system as the icon
notifying about the updates would appear but nothing ever came down.
YMMV

Windows version? Any errors in Windowsupdate.log?

Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors associated
with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

Or...

Absent any errors from your Windowsupdate.log, I'll suggest that, like many
around the world, you're seeing extreme delays caused by excessive demand on
the servers. We saw similar behavior in August when six (6) patches were
released and now there are nine (9), two or 3 of them for all OSS, Win98
through Win2K03.

Be patient: If Automatic Updates doesn't bring 'em in by, say, 17 Oct-05
(Monday), post back.

Or you can try downloading/installing 'em via Windows/Microsoft Update page
(and for best results, try it during off-peak hours, e.g., 11:00 PM-7:00AM
PDT). Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates
users further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
you've not gotten them yet).

Stephan was using Automatic Updates. Were/are you?

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:

Hi MowGreen (and others), many thanks for the help to the link. Unfortunately
the first file I tried to install came up with an error message about a
wmiprvse.exe file. Browsing the internet for some help on this file I found
out that I can install the programs, if I turn off the system restore
functionality in safe mode. After returning to normal mode all files
installed instantly. Now I am facing another problem, because i want to
switch the computer back to 'turn on system restore' and that encountered
another error message. Anyway, I will now dig further into this issue. Would
you know what could cause this issue?

You're welcome, Stephan. What's the exact error message when you attempt
to reenable System Restore ?
Check this useful site for info and assistance with SR :
