Hello everyone,
My Autometic Updates don't work anymore.
If i look at %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log I see many entries with error codes
0x80072ee7 and 0x8024402c.
I tried every workaround found on the net and on the MS KB: I checked the
hosts file, I cleared the proxy list with proxycfg -d and so on, but the
service still doesn't work.
May someone help me?

Thanks,
Alberto - Italy

Alberto,

Is the issue that you can not access the Windows Update site, not able
to download updates, or that you can not install the updates ?

Hi,
I think that my Automatic Updates service cannot download updates.
Note that I never open the Windows Update site; I leave my Automatic Update
service (wuauserv) do the work for me, but I don't see the yellow shield
icon anymore on the systray.
Another strange thing: if I go tho the Windows Update site with Internet
Explorer and only check if there are updates available (without download
anything), the Automatic Updates service begins the download immediately.

I'm running Windows XP SP2.
I also noted that thing: it seems that errors are reported because, when I
start my system, Automatic Updates tries to download updates immediately;
the problem is that I have only a 56k dial-up connection (hey, I'm in
Italy... ;-) ), that's surely down at startup!
So, the service reports (correctly, I think) errors 0x80072ee7 and
0x8024402c because it can't connect to the Windows Update website, but it
never retries the download, even if I bring my Internet connection up.

From XP's Help files :

" When you connect to the Internet, Windows sends data to the Windows
Update Web site about the way your computer is set up so the service can
determine which updates your computer needs. "

So, something is obviously out of whack if the system is attempting to
get updates while not connected to the internet.
Have you attempted cleaning out the relevant Software Distribution
folders ? :

Yes, I already tried this, but it didn't resolve the problem.

I could try to enable the firewall log to see if there are dropped packets
from the Windows Update site, but I don't think it's a firewall issue.
However, I'll also try this way.

Thanks,
Alberto

Alberto,

Do you have ZoneAlarm Pro running or are you using the Windows firewall?
Are there any Symantec products (Norton) installed ?
Before I suggest other possible steps it would help if you could tell us
what you've already attempted. Don't want to waste bandwidth suggesting
things you've already tried.
