automatic updates fail to download

I have my automatic updates set to alert me that there are downloads
available. When I click on download, the icon disappears from the task
tray and it seems that the download does not take place. I have Windows
XP home edition.

What other settings should I look for to try to fix the problem?

I have even turned off automatic updates and turned them back on again, but
the same happens.

I think it might be a time out issue with too many people trying to update
at once? I've checked my settings and they are correct.

I've noticed that if it fails, it pops back up on the following days log on
but not if I reboot sooner. I'm wondering if it fails to connect within the
alloted time whether its designed not to try for another 24 hours?

If it fails the first time I usually just log on to the update site and dl
from there.

Absent any Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be seeing a delay
caused by excessive demand on the servers. It can take up to 7 days for all
Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have been released.

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update:
Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users
further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).

I, too, have an Automatic Updates problem. For the time period I
checked, Microsoft's update history site shows that I received 180
updates. Comparing that to the updates listed in Add/Remove Programs,
I am missing 123 updates. Weird.

I use Dial-up so I am wondering if the sending and receipt do not
match up for that reason. However, if Microsoft can "read" my
computer, shouldn't Microsoft be able to tell that the update is not
on my system?

Can you think of any reason this is happening?

Open Add/Remove Programs > make sure the Show Updates box is checked at top,
right > Scroll down towards the very bottom of the list > Write down the
last four (4) "Security Update for Windows XP (KB123456)" listed and their
installation date, then post this information in a reply to this thread.
