Automatic Updates fail on one computer

We have a number of identically configured computers and on one of them the
updates downloaded by Automatic Update will not install. They fail with no
error code or message other than "failed".
If we go to update.microsoft.com and try to update manually we encounter the
same problem, same failure, same lack of error messages.
If we download each hotfix/patch manually and then install them one at a
time, manually, they install just fine and no longer appear as "needed" in
update.microsoft.com with the execption of KB 905474 which ALWAYS appears as
needed even if we install manually.
We done the register dll's, delete softwaredistribution, wu.bat, etc., etc.
that have been discussed in other threads with no improvement.
Tried it without our AV software (Norton) installed and no change (and
update works fine on the other 9 with AV installed).
I am completely baffled. Any suggestions?

My apologies but I wasn't sure what section would be most relevant. One
pass this morning seemed to take up a lot of lines in here .... it exceded
text limits for this discussion group. Is there something specific you would
like to see or should I post a session in several parts?

Thanks

You mentioned your AV software, but did not mention any Firewall software.
Are you using a FireWall package or Windows?

Since you can download them individually, have your tried clearing out your
Temporary Internet Files AND setting certain hosts as Trusted hosts ...
pertaining to updates?

We are looking for the parts of the log file that cover the failed
installation attempts (rather than download phases etc).

No desktop firewall (long story involving non-firewall friendly
applications). Perimeter hardware firewall run by a separate agency and not
impacting this for the other 100 or so computers in this operational area.

A Google search on "failed to spawn COM server" revealed the solution at:
http://www.wsus.info/forums/index.php?showtopic=6149

Launch Regedit, and navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole

In the right hand panel, if the value "DefaultAccessPermission" exists, then
delete it (right-click and select Delete). Do not touch
"DefaultLaunchPermission", which should be there.

Thank you for the suggestion.

It will probably be a day or two before I can actually test this (and I've
already installed the latest criticals manually). This is very believable as
we have to modify the default dcom permissions with DCOMCnfg on every one of
our computers to run a mission critical scientific app. We modify both
DefaultAccess and DefaultLaunch. I readily believe that something got
corrupted along the way .... so backing up and starting over with the
DefaultAccess and re-editing it sounds reasonable.

Thanks again
