help;

I have xp home edition sp2.
Recently I have discoverd that my automatic updates don't work no more.
I have tried to turn the automatic updates on but it doesn't react to
anything I do.

Knowing this I tried downloading microsoft update from microsoft.com but got
an error reading; 0x80070017

I am completely lost here and tried to find the solution within
microsoft.com but nothing found. Also the error numer is unkown.

I TOO have the same problem. I ran ALL of the spybot and MS bot catchers to
no avail. I searched the MS knowledge base and also didn't find a solution
that worked. It checks the UPDATE and just when it's ready to UPDATE, it
pukes and gives me the FOR MORE INFORMATION links page. Sigh.... If it
helps, this computer was updated from WIN2000 to Xp about a month ago, when
the problems started happening.
Thanx in advance for your help.
Thanx,
Drix in a non updated XP hell zone.

Hi mobster,

Clean out your temporary internet files.
0x80070017 relates to a Data error

Re-install Windows Update files

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x86.exe

Note If you have an x64-based computer, visit the following Microsoft Web
site
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x64.exe

Click Save in the File Download-Security Warning dialog box, and then select
the location where you want to save the file.
Double-click the file that you saved

See if you can access Windows Update now.

I have found the solution!

What I have seen is that a lot of people have the same problems I had so I
hope Microsoft are adding this error reading to their database with my
solution

click on 'My computer' on your desktop then richt-click on C:/ or your hard
disk, click on properties, then choose ' Extra' than you are shown 2
options, select the option which selects checks for errors, than tick both
boxes (one selects automatically corrects errors and the other search &
repair).

What they will do is correct and repair the damaged files
After this you should be able to select the automatic update , after you
have restarted your PC.

I am sorry for my translation because I have another language version of
Windows XP.

I hope this is helpfull to you all with the same error!

Kind regards,

Mobster

there is no *extra" but if you look under tools you will find it. If not then
go to the start menu and then run, write chkdsk /f and then press enter.
answer Y to the question about starting it on reboot and then reboot your
system....
