Was routinely using my XPSP2 PC with very little loaded (Excel, Notepad,
ActiveSync & IE7beta2) when suddenly the 'encountered an error & need to
close' dialog popped with the above error.
Hitting Send or Don't Send simply relaunched wuauclt.exe - and the same
dialog popped again. I had to disable Automatic Updates, stop & disable the
service to get back to being able to use the PC again. Killing the process
from task manager also didn't help - it simply restarted itself.
Assuming MS must have released a patch today that automatically updated and
then broke the updater, I took a look at w4.windowsupdate administrator site,
but it appears nothing has been released since 16 July - and I've been using
the PC every day since then.
Decided to restart updates & re-enable the service - and suddenly all
running fine again. The PC was not restarted in between, and I didn't restart
any other programs - so effectively all I did was stop AU for a while then
retsrat it again (something it was doing to itself anyway).
Anyone had this experience before or any ideas what happened?
