Automatic updates icon vanishes after clicking download

Hi all,
I got the notification in my system tray that a bunch of updates were
available for XP (pro version, SP2). My AU settings are "notify before
download/install". So I click the icon, see about 5-6 updates and click the
download button. But then nothing happens..no errors, no progress
information, nothing...I can duplicate this error by disabling AU, then
renabling it - get the notification, click download, then nothing.

Any ideas? I know I can install these updates thru the website, but that
kinda defeats the whole purpose of auto-update.

I've had the same problem with the same OS on two PCs (there are 6
updates this month). Haven't tried my laptop yet.
Also the WU website is awfully slow.
Methinks there might be a server congestion caused by the auto-update,
since now all the PCs in the world running under XP are automatically
donwloading the updates almost simultaneously...

Thanks for your reply. I think you are indeed correct in assuming server
congestion because when I logged into windows just now, the icon reappeared
with the download progress meter. It would be nice if XP would provide
better feedback though, maybe something like a balloon tip explaining the
delay rather than just nothing.

Open a cmd window and enter:

bitsadmin /wrap /monitor /allusers

(Press Ctrl-c to terminate the monitor.)

Note bitsadmin may only appear when you install the Support Tools.
However, there is an update to it available so perhaps you can get it
that way too.
