I had to reinstall WinXP Home. Now autoupdates tells me there are 85 priority
updates to be installed. I download them, but they fail to install every
time. Can't work out why. Any help?

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

2. Now install this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
If "Update for [Windows XP] (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs
(make sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...ry/927891.mspx

3. Reboot.

Thanks, I tried it and everything has now installed EXCEPT for one: Security
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.0 Service Pack 3 (KB930494)
This still refuses to install, although it continually downloads and asks to
install. I've downloaded Installer3.1 as instructed elsewhere, but it makes
no difference. Any advice on this?

OK, you're /getting/ there. <wink>

I assume you're running either WinXP Media Center Edition or Tablet Edition,
Phil. You'll see many threads in this newsgroup about problems installing
one or more of the recent .NET Framework updates. We have no idea why so
many users are having such problems.

=> For official support on the problem:

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Otherwise...

=> Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus and/or real-time protection
provided by any anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper,
Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). [If you disable a third-party
firewall, make CERTAIN you the Windows Firewall is enabled!]

=> If no joy, MS Product Support Services (PSS) has been recommending the
following to resolve the problem:

*Do each step, in order, for best results.*

1. Uninstall .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

3. Download and run the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-97BD16967A09

4. Download .NET Framework 1.0 SP3, saving it to your desktop then install
it manually
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c-83e78d4abc5b

5. Install 930494 either via Automatic Updates, Windows Update website
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com), or manually using the download from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B-6961034147BC

Let us know how you make out.

Save the following lines in a batch file and run from a command prompt
You will be re registering the components of windows and microsoft update in
the registry. You may also try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt to
ensure all windows files are present and in correct versions.

%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe iuengine.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wuaueng1.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wuauserv.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wups.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wuweb.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe wups2.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe cdm.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml2r.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml3r.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe msxmlr.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe msxml2.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll

wuauclt /detectnow

It's worked several times for me following windows repair installs.
Good luck

Expect some error messages as files that are not present for your version of
windows upate are not found.

When the procedure is finished, reboot your machine.

It's worked several times for me following windows repair installs.
Good luck
