Is there a log file somewhere on my PC that tells me the
activity of my Windows XP Pro SP2 Automatic Updates?

try
Your download history is stored in the Iuhist_catalogAdmin.xml file in your
Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 folder.

Hi,

%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
and
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows or C:\Winnt)

Note that the text goes pretty far out to the right on the latter file,
turn off any line wrapping in your text editor.

Thank-you. The %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log
is what I was looking for. It shows the dates/times of the updates
retrieved from Automatic Updates.
