the automatic update service on my computer running X P pro suddenly stopped
allowing me to use automatic updates or getting any updates from the windows
update or microsoft update site. when i click on the service in services.msc
, and try to restart the service i get a message saying that the service
cannot be restarted because it has no installed dependent devices so what
dependent devices need there be for the update service to work ?

Open the Services console, locate the AU service, open it's Properties.
Click the 'Log On ' tab
Log on as: should have the Local System account marked
The Hardware Profile should show Profile 1 and be marked as Enabled.
Are they ?

It is *possible* that the issue is being caused by a malware known as
Vundo. Please scan the system with the installed antivirus and then do
an online scan ( using Internet Explorer ) here:
http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_se...us-scanner.php

If malware is detected, suggest you post to a reputable anti-malware
forum for further assistance. If it's not, then read Method 2 here:
