Some of our automatic updates are installing but not these three consistently
since Sept. 2007: Update Office 2003 (KB907417); Outlook for Junk Mail
Filter (latest one out of four of them not installed is KB943552); Office
2003 Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3. The properties listed when I right
click on the question mark in history page only states the following: ...
v6/shared/images/status-failed.gif for all of them. No specific error code.
XP computer is set for medium security.
Please help as I am new to this discussion group and understanding computer
lingo. Go gently!
Thanks

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG
Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before attempting
to install the update(s).

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1122
and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support
link in left pane > Solve problems on your own.

4. Office Update newsgroup: microsoft.public.officeupdate

PA: Firstly, I cannot get a response when I click on th red status bar to
see what the installation code error number is to be able to decipher which
of the ##many codes to look into. Despite not having the error number, I
still have been perusing the many shown and cannot quite find one that truely
applies. Why the computer is able to allow some updates and not these one I
described is what is confusing. Any leads in this for this?

Dear PA: yes a few days ago and only a confirmation response from having
recieved it. I don't think I told them that when I click on the red status
bars that no response to inquiry of what the error is &\or code number for
the failure of the installation was. I will update them on that.

In addition to the overall problem, when I went through update history review
all the way back since we got the XP computer, I noticed that all windows
updates went through from beginning to now. What I did see as a concern is
that not one update related to Office 2003 product, is not installing
anything when the computer has been prompted to install the updates,
inclusive Outook 2003! I have never been aware of checking these problems as
I am not what you call 'computer literate' but it was when a friend came over
a few weeks ago to help me set up language/voice recognition through windows
that she found in her search that we didn't have many updates. The update
she first became aware of was for SP2 & 3 that was required to set up the
computer for my son to use microphone to dictate his school work, etc. (I
ended up purchasing Dragon product to meet these needs)

So why doesn't any updates for Office 2003 apply themselves? I checked to
see if the updates were set up for Automatic, and they are, otherwise the
other Windows updates wouldn't have gone through unless we manually had
allowed them. The first indication of not allowing Office 2003 updates began
June 15/07 and previous to this in the history log there is no indication
that updates were sent. We have not just purchased this Office 2003,
obviously, as it is no longer for sale; so all the years before, I would
assume, had no updates to install on our computer until that first date June
15, 2007.

What should I do now?

If Microsoft Update (MU), versus Windows Update (WU) is not the machine's
default update source, you/she would have to update Office manually via
Office Update website.

Microsoft Update FAQ
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...istaabout.aspx

Office Update (Validation Required)
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/do...incatalog.aspx

Once MU is selected as the default, Automatic Updates (AU) will use it as
the default and should offer updates for both Windows and Office. (Yes,
it's kinda confusing.)
