Automatic Updates not working with group policy

We are running WinXP Pro and Windows 2000 and have a group policy set to
automatically download and install Windows Updates. We have found many
machines have downloaded the updates but not installed them. The little
update icon is in the system tray and clicking on it results in the updates
getting installed. We can't figure out why the updates are not getting
installed and this is a big concern for us as machines are falling behind
with the updates. Anyone have any ideas how to rectify this?

It sounds like your GP is not configed the way you want it to behave. Edit
the GP for your updates, navigate under the computer configuration section
to
administrative Templates
expand Windows Components
open Windows Update
In right pane double click "Configure Automatic Updates" it sounds like you
have option 3 (default setting) configed select option 4 then chose a time
for them to be installed.

Hope this works,
james

We have it set to automatically download AND install daily at 9:00AM. Users
can look at the setting but not change it as it's greyed out.

for the properties of the Group Policy on the security tab do you have a chk
next to READ and a chk next to APPLY Group Policy?

No security tab on this policy. The users are getting this policy as they
settings appear in their Control Panel as specified and they are greyed out.

We or I should my company has run into the same issue. I have option 4
checked but when I log onto either the XP or 2000 machine it still has the
icon to install updates in the corner. I am also noticing the reporting
isn't accurate about the number patches needed per machine. Any suggestions
would be much appreciated.
