automatic updates now required??

I keep automatic updates turned off. I just went to update site and was
not allowed to proceed. I got error 0x8DDD0018.
It tells me I have to have Automatic Updates running. Is this now true?
Previously I always did my updates manually.

Absolutely not. It is strongly recommended to stop all updates on
Windows XP because M$ updates post SP3 are designed to sabotage your
system so that you buy Windows 7.

If you want to install a specific update, then you need to know the KB #
and then go to Microsoft website and search for it.

You could use Microsoft Update Catalogue but yo will have to install its
ActiveX to use it and you will need to use Internet Explorer version 6
or later.

Does enabling Control Panel | Automatic Updates correct the problem?

Could the problem be that the Service named Automatic Updates (as well as
BITS) isn't running?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Thank you very much. In services.msc the auto updates was not running. I
set that to automatic, and I was able to get my new updates.

Apparently this auto updates in services is different than the option to
have Windows get updates automatically (the one if the Control panel).

YW. But if (Control Panel >) Automatic Updates had been enabled, the
Automatic Updates (and BITS) services would have been enabled, too.

Are you aware of the fact that there's are Automatic Updates (AU) settings
other than Automatic? See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

If you choose the "Notify Only" setting, AU will notify you of available
updates in a timely manner. Then you can decide whether, when, and how you
want to download/install updates.

WHERE do we get that activeX????
