MS Support did indeed come through and helped me fix the problem. For those
readers who have had similar problems, let me share what I've learned:
Upon "Repairing and Reinstalling Office 2003" (Add or Remove Software/
Office 2003/ Change / Reinstall or Repair / Detect and Repair errors), I
found that the Office Source Engine service for some reason had become
disabled - an inadvertent keystroke perhaps somewhere along the line. To
enable it, right click on My Computer, select Manage, then Services and
Applications, then Services, and finally find and open Office Source Engine.
In the Office Source Engine Properties window's General tab under "Startup
type" select Automatic or Manual (the third choice being "Disabled"), then in
"Service status" click on the Start button and Apply.
In my case all updates were subsequently installed without a problem.
