Automatic Updates option not available

I'm using Microsoft Update on Windows XP Professional. The "Automatic
Updates" dialog box has "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to
install them" selected. I would like to change the setting to ""Automatic
(recommended)", but all the radio buttons are disabled. I'm having this
experience while logged on as an administrator. My PC is not on a
domain.Professional. The update and bits services are configured to
autostart.

Any suggestions?

Is this your machine or one owned by your employer?

What anti-virus, third-party firewall, security & anti-hijackware
applications are installed?

This is one of my home computers. I am the only system administrator. The
only third party security software is Norton Antivirus. Windows Defender is
also installed. The PC sits behind a NAT firewall. I frequently run
Microsoft Update manually, most recently yesterday afternoon, so the system
is completely up to date. In addition, I neurotically update Norton
Antivirus manually every day even though the system also has live update
enabled.

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

3. If all else fails:-
