Automatic Updates Service Fails To Start?

For no apparant reason my Windows XP SP2 box is logging an error in the event
log says "The Automatic Updates Service Hung on Startup". If I look in the
services applet the automatic updates service just says "Starting" and it
never starts. I had been using automatic updates just fine until recently
and I haven't installed anything new on the machine in a long time. Anyone
have any idea how to fix this or reinstall the automatic updates services?
Thanks.
