Hello folks
I am experiencing next problem: When I run Windows Update, I am getting a
message that One of the services - turns out Automatic Update - is disabled.
I enable it and re-run update and again getting the same message.
When I looked at the services - it's disabled again.
I tried to disable Antivirus, it does not help.
Any clues?

Same as your last question - but to you...

Any Clues?

- Operating system in question?
- Service Pack level of said operating system?
- What has your research turned up/have you done beyond what you have given
(keep flipping that switch back on...)?
- What changed between it working and it not working?
- What antivirus software are you running now and what antivirus software
has *ever* been on that machine to your knowledge?
- What antispyware/antiadware applications do/have you used in the
past/currently use?

Help us help you. ;-)

Hello Gene,

Please include what Operating System and Service Pack level are you using?,
and perhaps what other antivirus or antimalware software you may have
installed, Security suite and firewall, etc. etc.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375

Error message when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites
to install updates: 0x80070424
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002/>

If no joy, click the Start orb, in the Start Search field type in

cmd

Right click cmd.exe and choose 'Run as administer'. Follow the prompts
to allow the Command Prompt to run.

At the prompt, type in the below and press Enter after *each* command

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

exit

Restart the system and see if it can update now.

No joy... then

It would be a good idea to scan.

I recommend downloading and installing
MalwareBytes' Antimalware (MBAM) and
SUPERAntiSpywaяe (SAS).

Do a full scan with MalwaяeBytes' and
SUPERAntiSpywaяe.

<http://www.superantispyware.com/>
After the software (SAS) is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in
Safe Mode.

Reboot
-=-

<http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php>
After the software (MBAM) is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in
Regular Mode.

Reboot
-=-

Both free versions of MBAM and SAS are on-demand scanners and offer no
'real-time' protection. Keep them installed and use them as
'second-opinion' scanner which is purposely (by design) recommended by
their respective authoяs.
-=-

Please let us know what fixes the problem or if the pяoblem remains
-=-

Good luck

it did not help.

I found other people had similar problem and registration of related dll did
not help.

I do not remember it ever worked.

CA Security Center.

No other antiviruses or anything of this kind has been installed before.

.... Here is a fragment of output I get when i try to run it. Before I run
update, I check and make sure all 3 services are up and running.

[Error number: 0x8024001E]
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

Is this a sudden, new problem?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

It's been indicated in a previous posts:
Win XP SP3, 32 bit
CA security center. ( I have shut down it while running upgrade )
It's not sudden problem, it's new pc.
No other antiviruses were installed before.

Well, you see, I'm only reading what you post in this thread.

When (approx. date) did you purchase this computer and in what way is it a
"new PC?"

When (approx. date) did you install "CA security center" and when does your
subscription expire? Is this application named "CA Internet Security Suite
2010?"

Does the following describe what's happening? You open Start | Settings |
Control Panel | Automatic Updates and find that it's turned off so you turn
it on, OK your way out, reboot, and when you check again, you find that it's
turned off again.

Thanks to all who responded to my post. I really respect people who not only
willing to help others whom they don't know but even do not mind to share
their valuable experience.

I have resolved the problem. The problem was a number of viruses - 'trojan
horse generic17' and some others.
Re-registering automatic update dll - as a comon advise to this problem -
did not help.

I came accross of few posts which mentioned this problem with a solution to
run antivirus AVG. That's precisely what I did. I had a working and current
version of CA security suit 'CA security center'. Side point - get rid of it
is you happened to be using it as soon as you finish reading my post.

AVG antivirus found the problem but did not fix it. Then I downloaded Trend
Micro as it was advised in post. It finished the work by founding viruses and
cleaining them. Side point again: Trend Micro is highly recommended.
Then everything start working. I have installed McAfee. CA cr..p was
uninstalled at this point already. 2nd day it's all working.

As far as antiviruses: I thought they are all more or less the same. Untill
I noticed that Symantec takes too much IO's and cpu. Then I noticed that they
all use different amount of memory too. Now I know that some can slip viruses
to your machine. So using the right antivirus is not trivial task but it's
already a matter for different discussion.

Can I install MSE [or any other anti-virus application] to clean up my
already-infected computer?
