Automatic Updates service problem

I recently had to do an emergency repair on a Win2k SP4 server. The repair
involved re-installing Win2k SP2 (from CD), then re-upgrading to SP4.
Everything seemed to go ok, but the 'Automatic Updates' service will now not
start. It just sits there saying 'Starting' but never completes. This means
I can't apply any patches to the box. We use SUS internally, but that won't
connect, and the windowsupdate web site just sits on the page when it's
checking for the ActiveX control and gets no further.

I did read somewhere that the Automatic Updates service can get confused if
the server is upgraded (or repaired in my case), and the Auto Update cache
is not cleared out (or something along those lines). Anyone got any ideas
how to do this?

Anyone got any ideas???

TIA

Be more specific. What URL is showing in your Address bar?

It depends on what version of WU you are using now.
(See first question.)

If it's WUv5 or WUv6 the files you are thinking of are stored under
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

You could use that subdirectory name as a search term
on the WU troubleshooter to find the procedure you're thinking of.

However, if you notice those hits refer to specific error code symptoms;
so this makes me think you should be looking at your WindowUpdate.log
for clues first (and again that filename is dependent on the version of WU
that you are using.)

Good luck
