I'm running XP w/ SP1 ( I was running SP2 but had to 'repair' xp )
I can't access the Windows Update site.. just hangs.
When I check 'Services' it says Automatic Updates is starting.. but it never
starts.

Any suggestions ?

I tried the items listed in Microsofts web fix pages.

Make sure that BITS and the Automatic Updates service are started. To
do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type
services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then
click Properties.
3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click
OK.
5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click
Properties.
6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.
7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click
OK.

When I start service.msc I get a dialogue box asking "which " program
should it use to START this .msc file?

This whole update problem started after the last windows updates on
10/14/05

I've submitted a Support Request to Microsoft but never heard.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Steve

Hi,

Select to permanently use %windir%\system32\mmc.exe to start the .msc
file (%windir% is typically C:\Windows or C:\Winnt).

Many Thanks! I was able to start the BITS. However I am still
receiving the same problems where the updates page states:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the
problem

It then brings me to the Update "EXPRESS" and "CUSTOM" selections. If
I select either one, it just bring be back to the

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

problem

This is getting ridiculous. None of this was a problem before I
"allowed" my computer to accept updates from Oct 14.

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

My sincere Thanks!! I tried it and it solved the problem.

I was starting to wonder if this would ever be solved.

Thanks again. I appreciate it
