Automatic Updates services stops and disables

My computer recently had a virus/malware that I cleaned off but now I cannot
do Windows Update because the Automatic Updates service continually stops and
disables itself every time that I start it. There are no errors in the Event
Log and I cannot find what is doing it. I have run and rerun anti spyware
and it comes up clean.

Thoughts?

Adam,

How did you ascertain that all of the malwares were cleaned up ? Did you
run Malwarebytes Anti-malware ... if not, what tools did you use ?
Did you do a Repair Installation ?

*IF* the system is clean of *all* malware you can download, *save*, and
then run the Fixit on this page:

Run the Fixit using the Aggressive mode with the system connected to the
net as it will download required updating components.
*Reboot* after the Fixit has run.

then Microsoft Malicious removal Tool

scanning, both from Safe boot mode to see if it can get rid of any type of
malware permanently without hanging you up in the process.

Download Ccleaner <http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds>
It is suggested to download the CCleaner - Slim - No Toolba� which is the
version without the Yahoo! Toolbar.

Have you �un Services.msc and looked closely at the services?

Start button > select RUN> type in SERVICES.MSC

The following se�vices are needed by the processes at Windows Update.

In services management console ( services.msc) they must NOT be *Disabled*

in the Startup type.

They need to show a startup type of Manual or Automatic.

Here are the services & their Startup types:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) - Manual

Cryptographic Services - Automatic

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - Automatic

System Restore Service - Automatic

Now then, look at the entry for Automatic Updates. Does it shows Started in
the Status column? If not, click on "Start" the service link.

I have run Lavasoft's Ad Aware and AVG on the system and it has removed a
number of malware/viruses. I also used CCleaner.

I tried to run malwarebytes as you suggested but it did not install
correctly. It was missing a file and could not load.

I have run the "fix it" for Automatic Updates but it still stops and
disables itself after a few minutes.

Additional thoughts?

Adam,
Lose Adaware and download SuperAntiSpyware. Try and re-download
Malwarebytes and run it. CCleaner is for experienced users. It does more
damage than good if you're not sure how to use it. It's cleanup option is
good, but messing with the registry is dangerous unless being specifically
instructed by one of the MVP's. If you can't get Malwarebytes to run there
is definintely still some garbage on your computer.

Agreed on Ccleaner and the presence of malware, Michael.

Adam ... the Fixit still can not complete it's operation due to the
malware still being resident.
See if renaming the setup file for MBAM allows it to install.
Rename mbam-setup.exe to howdy.exe and see what happens.
