Automatic updates utilize high cpu

Most of my XP Pro computers are downloading critical updates and getting
stuck at 73%-90% and then utilize high cpu (100%) every 2 seconds, update.exe
runs on and off in processes. They will continue and keep downloading.
Download size increases constantly and just keeps going. Disabling virus
scan does nothing, also removing it does nothing. This even does it with a
plain OS with SP2. What can I do besides turning off the updater?

Same on my system, it got stuck at 95% and it will keep executing
update.exe even if automatic update is now turned off (+reboot). It
keeps downloading gigabytes of data during a day. It is really
annoying. If I startup updates manually (from the website) you can
actually see it looping in a dialog.

This is really annoying. I tried a "fix" that someone posted here... to
re-register several DLL's and the Crypto serivce, now Windows Update will not
work at all. This is a big time bummer. If I can't figure it out soon, I will
have to do some serious reloading on several systems... if that will even fix
the problem!

Any chance you have McAfee antivirus? If so, see this:
