If an XP SP2 client has automatic updates turned on where are the updates
coming from? Windows Update or the newer Microsoft Update that includes
critical updates for more software like Office products as well?

1) how to tell which it is?
2) how to change it? if possible?

David,

Good question. If one has opted into Microsoft Update via the Windows
Update site then AU is pulling down the updates from MU.
If one has not opted the system into MU, then it's pulling them down
from WU.

If Microsoft Update is on the Start Menu, then AU downloads from MU.
If Windows Update is on the Start Menu, AU downloads them from WU.

To change which site the downloads come down from via AU or from
visiting the sites, one first has to have the system acess Windows Update.
From there the system can be opted into MU from the hard to miss

> New! Get Microsoft Update today! Go

On the MU site, one can click the ' Change settings ' link in the left
frame and then opt out of MU in the right frame and return the system to
obtaining updates from WU either via AU or visiting the WU site.

Got it ? AU, WU, MU ... Curly would have said it best
"Wooo wooo woo" <w>

Ok,got that..But in my case none of these work! Since updating to SP2 All
updates have failed reguardless of where I try to get them from,I even copied
down the KB numbers of the failed updates and went to Microsoft Download
Center and they still failed. I took one person's advice and deleted the
SoftwareDistribution files after the command to stop then restart the
wuauserv,I went to the services area and made sure the Background Intellegent
thing was running. Still all my
updates fail to install. I'm using Windows XP Home SP2,with the NEW
Microsoft Udates set on auto download and install. Can you help me figure
this one out?

When the system was updated to SP2 were all periperherals disconnected
and the installed antivirus/security software **totally disabled** ?

Please check in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to see if
Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) is installed ? Is the box next to 'show
updates' checked at the top ?

Also, go to Start > Run > and type in

winver
Click OK or press Enter
Please post back with what comes up for Version and Build.
Thanks.
