Automatic Updates for Windows XP Pro

I have been getting pop ups all the time despite the op-up blocker being on.
Eve time I go and change the pop-up stettings they resort back to allowing
pop-ups. I have also been trying to get the automatic microsoft updates.
Howevmy laptop keeps ting that the automatic updates is turned of. I have
tried to reset this throught hcontrol panel. I change the settings to
automatibut they switch back to off. Even if I try and activate thpdates from
the microsoft site,t fails and tells me that the automatic stting is off. Can
anybody please help.

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

Judging from similar posts here in the past month or so, the behavior is may
be due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection, all of which is protected by a
rootkit.

I was able to fix Error 1058. Start, Run, type in "services.msc", OK.
Enable and Start COM+ System Application service, then do the same for Event
Log, Background Intelligent Transfer, and Automatic Updates. The service that
was missing from microsoft's knowledge base solution was the COM+ service,
and I figured it out thru trial and error. Good luck to all. Removing Vundo
GenE is a different and more difficult story, yet to be determined.
