Am unable to click on the button to allow automatic Windows update in the
Control Panel. Both the Automatic and Turn off the Automatic buttons are
grayed out but the Turn off button at some time has been clicked. How can
this be reset so I can turn on the Automatic update. (I am the only user on
the computer). Thanks

Have a look if the "Automatic Update Services" is running and set to
start automatically (Start -> Run -> services.msc).

Bye,

Tried your suggestion..."status" says started and "start up type" says
automatic, but both grayed out buttons unchanged. Thanks

Have you used any "Tuning"- and/or "AntiSpy/Phone Home" tool or used Group
Policies to restrict something?

Anyway, have a look into the registry, the heart and soul of Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows
exists? If true, is there value named "Windows Update" and set to "1"?
If true, set the value to "0" (zero) or delete the "Windows Update" value
there.

Bye,
Freudi

Thank you for all your suggestions. I've tried them, but the Auto Windows
update is unchanged. Any other suggestions?

10-7-07 I looked at other postings with the same problem and came upon one
which provided the value names for the AUOptions under the Registry Editor
mentioned to me. Values: 1 = keep my computer to update has been disabled in
Automatic Updates, 2 = notify of download and installation, 3 = automatically
download and notify of installation, 4 = automatically download and scheduled
installation. I entered the value 4 in the AU Options setting and it
worked!! Thanks.
