Automatic Windows Update failure

When using the Windows Update, none of the 'updates' listed will install.
Each one fails. I am able to search the microsoft site for each individual
update on that list Then manually download then install most, but not all
the updates.

Right now the 'Roots Certificates Update' and the '816093: Security Update
Microsoft virtual Machine' cannot install successfully. Each say
"Downloaded; Ready to install", but when attempting, the installation process
fails.

Is there a setting or the like which is preventing Windows Update to work
properly? Also, what is prevent the two updates above from installing
successfully?

Running W2K SP4

thanks for any assistance.

I am experiencing the EXACT issue. Any help? (Same date too! Maybe it's an
error in Microsoft Updates?) I use Windows XP Service Pack 2

I am experiencing the same issues as you two. Had a list of updates to do
in auto updates on sunday the 22 and only the first one or two worked.
Really need to find the solution for this since they are all critical
security updates. Thanks guys. Hope that Microsoft can figure this one out.

I'm experiencing this ever since I got that virus/trojan/spyware/adware in
the summer during July. After that, I can't download security updates! (AND
IT'S ONLY SECURITY UPDATES) I have norton antivirus, ghostsurf 2006, lavasoft
ad-aware, spybot S&D, spyware blaster, windows defender, A-squared, and
CCleaner. AND i STILL can't get rid of this "virus". That or it's microsoft's
fault. Help! (Mattchewp and cocoabean might have a "virus" too)

Mattchewp here again. i have been trying to update since the last post and I
still don't have luck. Has Microsoft help you with any way to get rid of the
virus. How did you know you had it because I have not had any notification
of being infected? What does the virus do?
