FU2: microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Hello,

I'm experiencing a problem with Windows Updates on a freshly
reinstalled Windows XP (with SP2 slipstreamed).

All post SP2 automatic updates went fine (90+ were installed, including
IE7), plus a couple I downloaded from WU web site, until yesterday
where the yellow shield informed me that 2 new updates were pending :
KB933579 and KB931906.

Few minutes after launching these updates, I noted that I had not
received the usual message informing that the updates were completed.

Double clicking on the yellow shield showed that the update process was
still "initializing". I cancelled the installation and rebooted - the
same happened when the yellow shield showed up.

I also tried to install the updates one at a time (I tried both) at no
avail.

Any idea ?

Thanks.

Since you haven't included any errors from windowsupdate.log, go straight
to...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB933579;
KB931906).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Sorry for the delay to provide an error code. It's because I don't
have regular access to the computer -- it is a friend's computer, not
mine.

The only error code I found in windowsupdate.log for an attempted WU
session is 0x8024000b.

I looked on WU's site help with this error number but did not found
anything related.

Agreed - 0x8024000B
-2145124341
SUS_E_CALL_CANCELLED
call has been cancelled

Which coincides with the fact you cancelled the updates.

Perhaps you could look at and try (ignore the title) Updates are not installed
successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates
after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If that doesn't help, then do as PA Bear says and start a free incident report.
